Wanting a new camera strap

This is a plea for help from photography loving friends – I need a new camera strap.

As I mentioned the other day, I’m off on a two week vacation in 24 days (but who’s counting?). And because I’m trying to stay on top of things, and not because I’m counting down or anything, I’m looking over what I need to pack and it occurred to me that I’ve never been totally happy with the camera strap that came with my DSLR.

It also occurred to me that I’d love a new camera/laptop bag (never had one of those), an iPad, and a couple new lenses, but I’m filing that under “Want”, not “Need”, and most assuredly under “Stuff I Can’t Afford Yet.”

So, camera straps.

Ideally, I want something that doesn’t dig into my neck, because I anticipate I will be the sole Photographer Who Documents This Family Vacation, and therefore will have said camera on constantly. It can be colorful, but that’s not my main concern (shockingly). Instead, I’d prefer something comfortable that doesn’t make my neck all hot, replaces or covers a DSLR strap, and doesn’t break the bank. If it’s got a lens cap pocket, too, that’d be an awesome bonus.

I popped over to Etsy and immediately got overwhelmed. So, I’m putting this out there – anybody got any shop recommendations?

Unfortunately, no – but now I’m a little mad at you because until this post, it never occurred to me I could have a colorful and funky and totally “me” camera strap for my DSLR. And of course, now that I’ve been introduced to the idea, I suddenly badly want a colorful and funky and totally “me” camera strap for my DSLR.

    Darn it.

I think I’ll stick to wanting a a colorful and funky and totally “me” banner for my website. I’m sending you an e-mail shortly! :-)

  2. You know, I bought all that fabric and never made my strap cover. I’d prefer a longer strap anyhow, so I’d be replacing the whole thing. I’ll live vicariously through you as you make your purchase and show it off. ;)

  3. Oh snap. I am so with Francesca. Didn’t know I needed-wanted-had-to-have one of these until now! They are all darling. My fave is the first one or the yellow and gray (but that would be dirty in a hurry). And a pocket for the lens cap? Genius!

As for laptop bags I have one custom made for me by Janine King on Etsy. Mine has peacock feathers all over it and I love just about everything about it. I wish the pockets on the inside were closed but other than that I have no complaints!

    Have a safe trip.

By the way… I have a proposition and I am emailing you right now…

    Enjoy the day.

Hey Brandi, love your blog and read it all the time. Gussy sews has some really cute camera strap covers with padding. Check it out: http://www.shopgussy.com/

    Hey Brandi,

Here’s a random idea that I’m going to put out there.

I have a small Lowepro camera bag (approx. 7″ x 4″ x 7″ with pockets, shoulder strap, even a rain cover) that I never use. I really want a camera case that will fit my Canon G11, so I can [gently] throw it into my shoulder bag.

Do you have such a thing, and would you be interested in the idea of a swap? If so, please feel free to email me and we can continue our conversation by email.

Hi Brandi — Do you know Photojojo.com? They have lots of things in their shop (which is here: http://photojojo.com/store/) including straps. What’s cool about Photojojo is that they test everything out before they decide to sell it. And they have great customer service and fun photo ideas. Maybe you can find something there that will fill the bill. They do have a few straps. Probably you’ll find lots of other stuff you need too! HA!

Can you let us know what you end up going with? My DSLR strap is really uncomfortable as I found out in Denmark last year. I kept holding up my camera to take the load off my neck only to get a cramp in my shoulder! I like the one with the little pocket for the lens cap. As far as bags go – I’m a huge fan of Crumpler bags and mine is awesome.
